The Palace of Versailles is one of the most visited destinations in the world — and rightly so. Just 20 km from Paris, it brings together centuries of royal history, vast French formal gardens and architecture that remains unmatched. Here's everything you need to plan an unforgettable day there.
Why Versailles is Worth the Trip
The royal estate covers more than 800 hectares. Beyond the iconic Hall of Mirrors, you'll discover the Royal Apartments, the Royal Chapel, the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet — the charming village where Marie-Antoinette loved to retreat. Allow at least half a day for the palace alone; a full day if you want to explore everything at your own pace.
Book your tickets online in advance at chateauversailles.fr — queues can exceed 2 hours during peak season (May–September).
How to Get to Versailles from Paris
RER C Train
The RER C connects Paris (Austerlitz, Saint-Michel, Invalides stations) to Versailles-Château-Rive-Gauche, a 10-minute walk from the main entrance. Journey time: around 40 minutes. Cost: approximately €5 each way. A budget option, though service quality varies and delays are common.
Transilien Train (Line N or L)
From Montparnasse (line N) or Saint-Lazare (line L), you can reach Versailles-Chantiers or Versailles-Rive-Droite. These stations are slightly further from the palace (15–20 min on foot), but trains are often more comfortable.
Private Chauffeur
For a family outing, a couple's visit or a corporate excursion, a private chauffeur makes the experience effortless: door-to-door from your hotel, a premium vehicle, no queues at the station. Paris Prestige Drive offers dedicated Versailles excursions with pick-up and return to Paris included.
